Residence timeline

A general map of the residence pathway in Argentina, with the key rules on absences from the country.

1. Temporary residence
Granted under different categories (work, study, family, MERCOSUR, among others), valid for a limited period subject to renewal.
→
2. Renewal / category change
A procedure before the National Immigration Directorate, filed before the temporary residence expires.
→
3. Permanent residence
Indefinite, once the deadlines and requirements of the prior category have been met.
✈ How long can you be outside Argentina without losing your residence?

Under Immigration Law No. 25,871 (art. 62 inc. e, as amended by Decree DNU 366/2025), the National Immigration Directorate may cancel a residence permit if, after it was granted, you remained outside the country for a period equal to or greater than 6 months (temporary residence) or 1 year (permanent residence).

There are exceptions: absences due to service in an Argentine public function, studies or research of interest to the country, or with prior express authorization from Immigration (which can be requested before traveling, even through the consulate).

Important: it is not automatic. Cancellation must be formally decreed by the Immigration authority — it does not happen simply by exceeding the deadline. And under art. 63 inc. b) of the same law, the consequence is a formal notice to regularize your immigration status or a directive to leave the country within a set period, not immediate expulsion.

General, indicative overview. Exact deadlines and conditions depend on your immigration category — ask us about your specific situation.
